Among               the               Federal               Bureau               of               Investigation               records               on               the               late               Senator               Edward               M.

Kennedy               that               recently               were               released               is               a               1965               memo               in               which               a               wealthy               socialite               alleges               that               the               Kennedy               brothers,               Jack,               Bobby               &               Teddy,               engaged               in               sex               parties               at               a               tony               New               York               hotel.

The               Kennedy               boys'               sister,               Patricia               Kennedy               Lawford,               also               allegedly               took               place               in               the               sexual               shenanigans,               as               did               her               husband,               Peter               Lawford.

In               addition               to               being               the               brother-in-law               of               President               John               F.

Kennedy,               Attorney               General               (and               later               Senator)               Robert               F.

Kennedy               and               Senator               Edward               M.

Kennedy,               movie               star               Peter               Lawford               was               a               member               of               Frank               Sinatra's               fabled               "Rat               Pack."               Other               Rat               Pack               members               implicated               by               the               woman               in               the               hotel               orgies               include               Ol'               Blue               Eyes               himself               and               Rat               Pack               compadre               Sammy               Davis,               Jr.
               Marilyn               Monroe,               whom               various               writers               have               claimed               was               the               mistress               of               JFK,               RFK               or               both               and               who               in               other,               more               outlandish               accounts,               allegedly               was               murdered               by               the               CIA               on               the               orders               of               RFK               (who               used               Peter               Lawford               as               a               go-between,               pimp               and               executioner)               also               allegedly               took               part               in               the               sex               parties.
               Records               were               released               under               the               Freedom               of               Information               Act.
               Sex               Memos
               The               FBI               memo               states               that               40-year               Jacqueline               Hammond,               whom               it               says               had               been               married               to               former               Ambassador               to               Spain               Ogden               Hammond,               claimed               that               the               Kennedy               clan               conducted               its               bacchanalian               orgies               at               The               Carlyle               in               Manhattan,               where               both               she               and               JFK               maintained               apartments.

The               former               Mrs.

Hammond               was               described               as               being               "wealthy"               with               a               fortune               of               several               million               dollars.
               (Ogden               Hammond,               the               ambassador               to               Spain               under               Calvin               Coolidge,               had               passed               away               in               1956               at               the               age               of               87.

A               survivor               of               the               sinking               of               the               Lusitania               in               which               his               first               wife               perished,               the               wealthy               Republican               banker               had               re-married,               but               not               to               Jacqueline.

His               daughter,               Millicent               Fenwick,               was               a               Republican               Congresswoman               from               New               Jersey               from               1975-81               and               lost               the               1982               Senate               race               to               Frank               Lautenberg.

The               F.B.I.

might               have               been               referring               to               Hammond's               son               and               Fenwick's               brother               Ogden               Hammond,               Jr.,               who               died               in               the               mid-1970s.

He               had               served               as               U.S.

Vice               Consul               to               Vienna               in               1939.

Ogden,               Jr.

had               inherited               a               third               of               his               father's               considerable               estate.)
               The               memo,               which               is               dated               July               14,               1965,,               carries               no               security               classification.
               A               month               later,               the               F.B.I.

issued               another               memo               with               a               sex               theme.

This               one               reported               that               the               Mafia               planned               to               frame               RFK,               Teddy               and               Peter               Lawford               at               a               sex               party,               using               "associates"               of               Frank               Sinatra.

(The               singer               had               fallen               out               with               the               Kennedys               while               JFK               was               still               alive,               which               had               led               to               his               purging               Lawford               from               the               Rat               Pack.)
               According               to               the               August               3,               1965               memo,               an               informant               linked               to               the               Milwaukee               mob               had               told               the               F.B.I.

that               the               Kennedys               and               their               brother-in-law               were               to               be               burned               in               a               version               of               the               badger               game,               with               women               --               some               of               Sinatra's               sexpots               --               finagling               them               into               compromising               positions.
               Although               the               F.B.I.

considered               the               informant               reliable,               it               did               not               give               much               credence               to               the               rumor.
               Under               Director               J.

Edgar               Hoover,               the               F.B.I.

had               been               bugging               Martin               Luther               King,               Jr.

to               get               the               "dirt"               on               his               sexual               liaisons.

They               used               the               information               to               harass               him,               at               one               point               urging               him               to               commit               suicide               lest               his               secrets               be               revealed.
               Hoover               also               hated               the               Kennedys,               particularly               Bobby,               who               had               been               his               boss               when               he               served               his               brother               Jack               and               JFK's               successor               Lyndon               Baines               Johnson               as               Attorney               General.

Hoover               was               known               to               keep               dossiers               on               everybody               in               Washington,               having               his               agents               dig               for               dirt               that               could               be               used               for               political               leverage.
               Assassination               Threats
               In               addition               to               the               July               and               August               sex               party               memos,               copies               of               which               were               included               in               Edward               Kennedy's               F.B.I.

file               and               which               might               have               been               part               of               a               bigger               report               on               the               Kennedys,               there               are               numerous               documents               pointing               to               multiple               assassination               threats               against               Teddy.
               There               is               also               a               memo               about               an               attempted               blackmail               plot               using               doctored               photos               and               a               request               from               the               Nixon               White               House               into               details               of               the               life               of               Mary               Jo               Kopechne,               the               former               RFK               campaign               staffer               who               perished               when               Teddy               drove               his               Oldsmobile               off               of               a               bridge               at               Chappaquiddick               Island               in               1969.
               Interestingly,               the               F.B.I,.

had               interviewed               Kopechne               twice               in               1967,               when               she               was               a               secretary               in               RFK's               Senate               office.

They               were               seeking               information               on               an               acquaintance               who               had               passed               bad               checks,               including               one               that               forged               her               name.
               This               is               the               first               time               the               F.B.I.

has               ever               revealed               it               had               interviewed               her.

The               files               also               revealed               that               the               Bureau               had               her               under               surveillance,               purportedly               because               of               her               connection               to               the               man,               who               was               later               convicted               of               fraud.

Mary               Jo               Kopechne               has               always               been               portrayed               as               a               staunch               Catholic               of               high               morals,               but               the               F.B.I.

files               reveal               that               the               man               spent               a               night               at               her               apartment.
               Sirhan               Sirhan
               Another               F.B.I.

memo,               dated               November               29,               1977               quotes               a               jail               house               informant               alleging               that               Sirhan               Sirhan,               who               was               serving               a               life               sentence               for               the               assassination               of               R.F.K.,               had               tried               to               recruit               him               to               murder               Teddy               Kennedy.

Allegedly,               the               prisoner,               who               had               served               18               months               in               Soledad               Prison               and               had               the               jail               cell               next               to               Sirhan               Sirhan,               had               been               interviewed               around               September               1975,               after               he               had               been               in               Soledad               for               two               months,               by               FBI               agents               seeking               information               about               the               assassin.
               After               having               problems               with               Sirhan               Sirhan,               the               two               inmates               eventually               became               close.

The               assassin               then               allegedly               offered               the               informant               one               million               dollars               to               kill               Teddy               Kennedy,               which               he               declined.
               The               informant               told               the               authorities               he               did               not               believe               that               the               contract               was               offered               to               anyone               else               as               Sirhan               Sirhan               had               only               one               other               friend,               besides               himself,               in               prison.

The               assassin               told               him               that               if               he               changed               his               mind               once               he               was               out               of               prison,               he               was               to               contact               Sirhan's               mother.
               The               FBI               informed               Senator               Kennedy's               office               and               the               Boston               FBI               office               about               the               threat,               but               it               was               never               determined               whether               Sirhan               Sirhan               had               actually               made               the               offer               and               represented               a               credible               threat               to               the               life               of               RFK's               brother.
               Vulnerable
               The               reputations               of               John               F.

Kennedy               --               his               lust               for               women               --               and               of               Edward               M.

Kennedy               --               his               strong               thirst               for               strong               waters               and               to               the               fairer               sex               --               made               both               vulnerable               to               their               enemies,               as               potential               blackmail               victims               or               as               the               subject               of               a               sex               scandal.

In               fact,               the               Chappaquiddick               Incident,               with               its               overtones               of               both               drunkenness               and               illicit               sex,               nearly               ruined               Teddy               Kennedy's               political               career.

It               certainly               kept               him               from               running               for               the               Democratic               Presidential               nomination               in               both               1972               and               '76,               which               he               likely               would               have               won.
               But               for               Chappaquiddick,               Teddy               Kennedy               and               not               Jimmy               Carter               might               have               been               the               39th               President               of               the               United               States,               or               may               have               defeated               Richard               Nixon               in               1972.
               In               his               lifetime,               Jack               Kennedy               had               built               up               a               formidable               reputation               as               a               ladies               man               as               the               son               of               a               multi-millionaire               former               Ambassador,               then               as               a               Congressman,               Senator               and               President.

His               Hollywood               conquests               allegedly               included               Marlene               Dietrich               (who               also               was               the               mistress               of               JFK's               father,               Joseph               Kennedy,               an               erstwhile               movie               producer),               Angie               Dickinson               and               Jaye               Mansfield.
               JFK's               rumored               romance               with               Marilyn               Monroe,               and               the               possible               involvement               of               the               C.I.A.

in               "eliminating"               her               to               spare               the               President               from               potential               political               embarrassment,               was               first               raised               in               the               mainstream               press               by               Norman               Mailer               in               his               1973               biography               Marilyn.

In               an               interview               on               60               Minutes,               MIke               Wallace               told               Mailer               he               believed               his               theory               was               outlandish.
               The               story               took               on               a               life               of               its               own,               to               the               point               where               now               a               JFK-Marilyn               liaison               is               accepted               as               "historical               fact."
               Rumors               about               Marilyn               and               Bobby               Kennedy,               a               staunch               Catholic               and               devoted               family               man               and               the               father               of               10               children               (his               11th               child               was               born               after               his               assassination)               only               began               to               surface               much               later.

In               the               1980s,               the               trope               that               RFK               and               MM               were               involved               became               more               widespread,               as               writers               began               concocting               ever               wilder               conspiracy               theories               about               the               Kennedy               brothers               and               Monroe.
               Teddy               Kennedy               was               known               to               be               an               alcoholic               and               to               have               engaged               in               extra-marital               affairs               when               married               to               his               first               wife,               Joan.

He               once               attended               a               Washington,               D.C.

Halloween               party               dressed               in               a               Barney               the               purple               dinosaur               costume,               declaring,               "They               don't               call               me               Tyrannosaurus               Sex               for               nothing."
               Friends               such               as               Senator               Orrin               Hatch               (R-UT)               intervened               and               saw               that               he               got               help.

The               last               of               the               Kennedy               brothers               managed               to               calm               his               inner               demons               and               finally               found               piece               of               mind               in               his               second               marriage               to               Vicki               Reggie               Kennedy,               his               widow.
               Related               News
               In               a               related               development,               tape               recordings               of               seven               interviews               that               Arthur               Schlesinger,               Jr.

conducted               with               Jacqueline               Kennedy               in               1964               will               be               made               public               at               the               request               of               Caroline               Kennedy.

The               interviews               cover               the               former               First               Lady's               opinions               on               her               husband,               his               Presidency               and               their               marriage.
               Retired               Archbishop               Phiip               Hannan,               in               his               recently               published               autobiography               The               Archbishop               Wore               Combat               Boots,               contends               that               Jacqueline               Kenedy               and               JFK               were               in               love               with               one               another               right               up               to               the               time               he               was               assassinated,               despite               the               President's               infidelities.
               Hannan,               an               auxillary               bishop               in               Washington,               D.C.

in               the               early               1960s,               was               personally               picked               by               Jackie               Kennedy               to               deliver               JFK's               eulogy               at               his               state               funeral.

He               subsequently               officiated               at               the               December               1963               reburial               of               their               two               deceased               children               next               to               JFK's               grave               at               Arlington               National               Cemetery.
               In               the               book,               Hannan               reproduces               a               handwritten               note               he               received               from               Jackie               several               days               after               the               children               had               been               reburied,               just               three               days               short               of               the               one               month               anniversary               of               the               assassination.
               "If               only               I               could               believe               that               he               could               look               down               and               see               how               he               is               missed               and               how               nobody               will               ever               be               the               same               without               him,"               she               wrote.
               From               his               interaction               with               Jackie               Kennedy               in               the               month               after               her               husband's               murder,               he               concludes,               "theirs               was               a               relationship               grounded               in               deep,               emotional               conviction               until               the               very               end."
               It               is               something               for               the               historians               to               consider               when               writing               about               the               American               "Camelot."
