Among the Federal Bureau of Investigation records on the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy that recently were released is a 1965 memo in which a wealthy socialite alleges that the Kennedy brothers, Jack, Bobby & Teddy, engaged in sex parties at a tony New York hotel. The Kennedy boys' sister, Patricia Kennedy Lawford, also allegedly took place in the sexual shenanigans, as did her husband, Peter Lawford. In addition to being the brother-in-law of President John F. Kennedy, Attorney General (and later Senator) Robert F. Kennedy and Senator Edward M. Kennedy, movie star Peter Lawford was a member of Frank Sinatra's fabled "Rat Pack." Other Rat Pack members implicated by the woman in the hotel orgies include Ol' Blue Eyes himself and Rat Pack compadre Sammy Davis, Jr. Marilyn Monroe, whom various writers have claimed was the mistress of JFK, RFK or both and who in other, more outlandish accounts, allegedly was murdered by the CIA on the orders of RFK (who used Peter Lawford as a go-between, pimp and executioner) also allegedly took part in the sex parties. Records were released under the Freedom of Information Act. Sex Memos The FBI memo states that 40-year Jacqueline Hammond, whom it says had been married to former Ambassador to Spain Ogden Hammond, claimed that the Kennedy clan conducted its bacchanalian orgies at The Carlyle in Manhattan, where both she and JFK maintained apartments. The former Mrs. Hammond was described as being "wealthy" with a fortune of several million dollars. (Ogden Hammond, the ambassador to Spain under Calvin Coolidge, had passed away in 1956 at the age of 87. A survivor of the sinking of the Lusitania in which his first wife perished, the wealthy Republican banker had re-married, but not to Jacqueline. His daughter, Millicent Fenwick, was a Republican Congresswoman from New Jersey from 1975-81 and lost the 1982 Senate race to Frank Lautenberg. The F.B.I. might have been referring to Hammond's son and Fenwick's brother Ogden Hammond, Jr., who died in the mid-1970s. He had served as U.S. Vice Consul to Vienna in 1939. Ogden, Jr. had inherited a third of his father's considerable estate.) The memo, which is dated July 14, 1965,, carries no security classification. A month later, the F.B.I. issued another memo with a sex theme. This one reported that the Mafia planned to frame RFK, Teddy and Peter Lawford at a sex party, using "associates" of Frank Sinatra. (The singer had fallen out with the Kennedys while JFK was still alive, which had led to his purging Lawford from the Rat Pack.) According to the August 3, 1965 memo, an informant linked to the Milwaukee mob had told the F.B.I. that the Kennedys and their brother-in-law were to be burned in a version of the badger game, with women -- some of Sinatra's sexpots -- finagling them into compromising positions. Although the F.B.I. considered the informant reliable, it did not give much credence to the rumor. Under Director J. Edgar Hoover, the F.B.I. had been bugging Martin Luther King, Jr. to get the "dirt" on his sexual liaisons. They used the information to harass him, at one point urging him to commit suicide lest his secrets be revealed. Hoover also hated the Kennedys, particularly Bobby, who had been his boss when he served his brother Jack and JFK's successor Lyndon Baines Johnson as Attorney General. Hoover was known to keep dossiers on everybody in Washington, having his agents dig for dirt that could be used for political leverage. Assassination Threats In addition to the July and August sex party memos, copies of which were included in Edward Kennedy's F.B.I. file and which might have been part of a bigger report on the Kennedys, there are numerous documents pointing to multiple assassination threats against Teddy. There is also a memo about an attempted blackmail plot using doctored photos and a request from the Nixon White House into details of the life of Mary Jo Kopechne, the former RFK campaign staffer who perished when Teddy drove his Oldsmobile off of a bridge at Chappaquiddick Island in 1969. Interestingly, the F.B.I,. had interviewed Kopechne twice in 1967, when she was a secretary in RFK's Senate office. They were seeking information on an acquaintance who had passed bad checks, including one that forged her name. This is the first time the F.B.I. has ever revealed it had interviewed her. The files also revealed that the Bureau had her under surveillance, purportedly because of her connection to the man, who was later convicted of fraud. Mary Jo Kopechne has always been portrayed as a staunch Catholic of high morals, but the F.B.I. files reveal that the man spent a night at her apartment. Sirhan Sirhan Another F.B.I. memo, dated November 29, 1977 quotes a jail house informant alleging that Sirhan Sirhan, who was serving a life sentence for the assassination of R.F.K., had tried to recruit him to murder Teddy Kennedy. Allegedly, the prisoner, who had served 18 months in Soledad Prison and had the jail cell next to Sirhan Sirhan, had been interviewed around September 1975, after he had been in Soledad for two months, by FBI agents seeking information about the assassin. After having problems with Sirhan Sirhan, the two inmates eventually became close. The assassin then allegedly offered the informant one million dollars to kill Teddy Kennedy, which he declined. The informant told the authorities he did not believe that the contract was offered to anyone else as Sirhan Sirhan had only one other friend, besides himself, in prison. The assassin told him that if he changed his mind once he was out of prison, he was to contact Sirhan's mother. The FBI informed Senator Kennedy's office and the Boston FBI office about the threat, but it was never determined whether Sirhan Sirhan had actually made the offer and represented a credible threat to the life of RFK's brother. Vulnerable The reputations of John F. Kennedy -- his lust for women -- and of Edward M. Kennedy -- his strong thirst for strong waters and to the fairer sex -- made both vulnerable to their enemies, as potential blackmail victims or as the subject of a sex scandal. In fact, the Chappaquiddick Incident, with its overtones of both drunkenness and illicit sex, nearly ruined Teddy Kennedy's political career. It certainly kept him from running for the Democratic Presidential nomination in both 1972 and '76, which he likely would have won. But for Chappaquiddick, Teddy Kennedy and not Jimmy Carter might have been the 39th President of the United States, or may have defeated Richard Nixon in 1972. In his lifetime, Jack Kennedy had built up a formidable reputation as a ladies man as the son of a multi-millionaire former Ambassador, then as a Congressman, Senator and President. His Hollywood conquests allegedly included Marlene Dietrich (who also was the mistress of JFK's father, Joseph Kennedy, an erstwhile movie producer), Angie Dickinson and Jaye Mansfield. JFK's rumored romance with Marilyn Monroe, and the possible involvement of the C.I.A. in "eliminating" her to spare the President from potential political embarrassment, was first raised in the mainstream press by Norman Mailer in his 1973 biography Marilyn. In an interview on 60 Minutes, MIke Wallace told Mailer he believed his theory was outlandish. The story took on a life of its own, to the point where now a JFK-Marilyn liaison is accepted as "historical fact." Rumors about Marilyn and Bobby Kennedy, a staunch Catholic and devoted family man and the father of 10 children (his 11th child was born after his assassination) only began to surface much later. In the 1980s, the trope that RFK and MM were involved became more widespread, as writers began concocting ever wilder conspiracy theories about the Kennedy brothers and Monroe. Teddy Kennedy was known to be an alcoholic and to have engaged in extra-marital affairs when married to his first wife, Joan. He once attended a Washington, D.C. Halloween party dressed in a Barney the purple dinosaur costume, declaring, "They don't call me Tyrannosaurus Sex for nothing." Friends such as Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) intervened and saw that he got help. The last of the Kennedy brothers managed to calm his inner demons and finally found piece of mind in his second marriage to Vicki Reggie Kennedy, his widow. Related News In a related development, tape recordings of seven interviews that Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. conducted with Jacqueline Kennedy in 1964 will be made public at the request of Caroline Kennedy. The interviews cover the former First Lady's opinions on her husband, his Presidency and their marriage. Retired Archbishop Phiip Hannan, in his recently published autobiography The Archbishop Wore Combat Boots, contends that Jacqueline Kenedy and JFK were in love with one another right up to the time he was assassinated, despite the President's infidelities. Hannan, an auxillary bishop in Washington, D.C. in the early 1960s, was personally picked by Jackie Kennedy to deliver JFK's eulogy at his state funeral. He subsequently officiated at the December 1963 reburial of their two deceased children next to JFK's grave at Arlington National Cemetery. In the book, Hannan reproduces a handwritten note he received from Jackie several days after the children had been reburied, just three days short of the one month anniversary of the assassination. "If only I could believe that he could look down and see how he is missed and how nobody will ever be the same without him," she wrote. From his interaction with Jackie Kennedy in the month after her husband's murder, he concludes, "theirs was a relationship grounded in deep, emotional conviction until the very end." It is something for the historians to consider when writing about the American "Camelot."
